A 23-year-old volunteer with Syria’s Red Crescent aid group was shot dead on Friday, the fourth aid worker to fall victim to the country’s violent unrest, Reuters writes.
Bashar al-Youssef was shot in the head while doing first-aid duty with the charity in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor, the scene of heavy fighting between government security forces and rebels seeking to oust President Bashar al-Assad.
The Syrian Arab Red Crescent said Mr. al-Youssef was wearing a uniform clearly marked with the group’s emblem when he was killed. Red Crescent workers say they have been targeted by both Assad loyalists and opposition forces, which distrust the charity because of its neutrality in the conflict.
