Free-Press Activist Group to Collect Donations for WikiLeaks

December 17, 2012, 10:42 am

A new foundation led by high-profile freedom-of-information advocates says it will solicit contributions for WikiLeaks, the nonprofit anti-secrecy group that has seen funding dry up since Visa, MasterCard, and PayPal stopped processing its donations two years ago, The New York Times reports.

Pentagon Papers whistle-blower Daniel Ellsberg, Electronic Frontier Foundation co-founder John Perry Barlow, and actor and activist John Cusack are among the Freedom of the Press Foundation’s board members.

The foundation has set up a Web site to allow anonymous donors to give to WikiLeaks and other investigative and anti-secrecy groups, saying the effort will help protect such organizations against pressures from government and businesses.
