Former U.S. congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords announced the formation Tuesday of a new organization to raise money and lobby for tougher gun laws, while a nonprofit group led by Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York began an advertising campaign on the issue, the Los Angeles Times reports.
On the second anniversary of the shooting in Tucson, Ariz., that killed six people and severely wounded Ms. Giffords, she and her husband, ex-astronaut Mark Kelly, introduced Americans for Responsible Solutions in a USA Today opinion column. They said the group aims to “raise the funds necessary to balance the influence of the gun lobby.”
Mayors Against Illegal Guns, founded by Mr. Bloomberg and Mayor Thomas Menino of Boston, began running a television ad Tuesday featuring Roxanna Green, whose 9-year-old daughter was killed in the Tucson attack. The commercial will run in Washington, D.C., and in areas that have had mass shootings.
