Giffords’s Gun-Control Group Draws First $1-Million Gift

January 10, 2013, 10:53 am

The new advocacy organization founded by former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords to lobby for stricter gun laws has drawn a $1-million start-up gift from a pair of wealthy Texas attorneys, says Bloomberg.

Steve Mostyn, of Houston, who made the donation with his wife, Amber, was a major contributor to President Barack Obama’s campaign. He said Americans for Responsible Solutions, the political action committee launched Tuesday by mass-shooting-victim Giffords and her husband, ex-astronaut Mark Kelly, will help prevent the National Rifle Association “from bullying common sense out of the [gun control] discussion.”

Mr. Mostyn, a member of the new group’s board, said it will have a nonprofit arm to conduct an education campaign on the gun issue.
