More than 2,000 nonprofit groups, corporations, and stores are slated to participate in “Giving Tuesday,” the first organized attempt to slot giving into the post-Thanksgiving shopping rush, writes The Wall Street Journal. Patterned after Black Friday and more recently established “holidays” like Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, the effort was developed by the United Nations Foundation and New York’s 92nd Street Y to promote giving and volunteerism during the late-November stretch now firmly identified with consumption.
Major charities such as the Salvation Army and Operation Smile are staging Giving Tuesday events around the country, and big companies like the Gap and Aldo will donate to charity through matching programs and other avenues. “I don’t see it as an antidote [to Black Friday] or a competition, but we’re scratching another itch,” said Kathy Calvin, president of the United Nations Foundation.
