Gulf Coast Groups Share $43.7-Million in BP Grants

November 8, 2012, 11:39 am

More than 100 nonprofit organizations and government agencies in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida will get slices of $43.7-million in grants from oil company BP to promote tourism and the seafood industry along the Gulf Coast, the Associated Press reports. The grant round is the first under a proposed class-action settlement arising from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

The deal calls for BP to give a total of $57-million for tourism and seafood-promotion efforts. Lawyers for the oil company and private plaintiffs are seeking final approval of the settlement Thursday in U.S. District Court.
