Head of Tenn. Veterans Charity Accused of Grant Theft

January 17, 2013, 10:35 am

The leader of a Tennessee nonprofit that aids homeless veterans has been charged with stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal grant money, according to The City Paper of Nashville.

Authorities allege Birdie Anderson of Nashville put to “her own use or use of another” some of the $360,000 in Department of Veterans Affairs grants her organization, Next Stage, received in 2006 and ’07.

The grants were intended to help Next Stage purchase two properties and a vehicle. The government is seeking forfeiture of the real estate and the return of $280,000 in grant funds.
