In the Arts: Postal Museum Gets $8-Million; Boston Station Goes All-News

September 24, 2009, 1:56 pm

A financial manager has donated $8-million to the National Postal Museum, the largest gift in the D.C. institution’s history, according to The Washington Post.

The gift will pay for a 12,000-square-foot gallery named for the donor William H. Gross, founder of the global investment company Pimco. Mr. Gross has amassed one of the world’s most important stamp collections.

In other arts news, The Boston Globe says that public broadcaster WGBH is converting to a news and talk format. The change — made possible by WGBH’s purchase of the classical-music station WCRB — will see WGBH go head-to-head against another Boston NPR affiliate, WBUR.

Also, the Los Angeles Times reports on a statement by Rocco Landesman, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, on the demotion of the organization’s communications director.

And Crain’s New York Business reports on the ascendance of women to top positions with several of New York’s signature cultural institutions, including the Lincoln Center, the Museum of Modern Art, and the New York Public Library.
