In the Arts: Snowstorm Means Lost Weekend for Washington-Area Institutions

February 9, 2010, 5:00 am

Closures and cancellations were the norm for Washington-area theaters and museums over the weekend as the second major storm of the winter dropped 18 inches of snow on the capital and more on surrounding suburbs, reports The Washington Post.

In other arts news, the Metropolitan Opera has hired its former general manager, Joseph Volpe, to represent management in critical forthcoming labor negotiations, says The New York Times.

Also, this summer’s Aspen Music Festival will run eight weeks rather than the usual nine, saving about $500,000, writes The Denver Post.

And the Los Angeles Times reports on the metamorphosis of the Pasadena, Calif., arts scene, with venerable institutions like the just-closed Pasadena Playhouse facing dire straits while some museums and performance groups have succeeded by cultivating a younger, more diverse audience.
