WellPoint, the nation’s largest private health insurer and a frequent target of political critics over hikes in premiums, has made good on just over a fifth of its 2007 pledge that its foundation would spend $30-million over three years to aid America’s uninsured, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Citing tax filings, WellPoint promotional materials, and former company executives, the newspaper wrote that from 2007 to 2009 the foundation distributed less than $6.2-million in grants aimed specifically at helping the uninsured secure coverage and care, about 11 percent of its total giving during that period.
Kristin Binns, a WellPoint spokeswoman, disputed the reporting, saying the firm’s own tracking indicates it met the $30-million goal last year and “we continue donating to uninsured causes.”
