Israel Mulls Law Requiring Nonprofit Groups to Report Foreign Donations

August 18, 2010, 1:11 pm

Israel’s parliament is considering a bill that would require the nation’s nonprofit groups to report every donation they get from foreign governments or entities largely financed by a foreign government, the Israeli daily Haaretz says.

Zeev Elkin, of the Likud party, which is part of Israel’s coalition government, said the measure is intended to prevent a repeat of the Goldstone Report, a highly critical United Nations study of the 2007 war in Gaza, which he said was based largely on material provided by foreign-financed Israeli organizations.

The bill “will protect Israelis from foreign influence that is not compatible with national needs and interests,” Mr. Elkin said.

Leftist and civil-rights groups denounced the proposal as a “McCarthyist” attempt to intimidate organizations that oppose the coalition government’s policies.
