John D. MacArthur’s Adopted Home Seeks More From His Foundation

March 10, 2010, 1:15 pm

Leaders in John D. MacArthur’s adopted home of Palm Beach County, Fla., are calling on the late philanthropist’s $5-billion foundation to direct more money to the area, reports The Palm Beach Post.

While the county has reaped most of the $183-million the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has spent in Florida, some local officials and business leaders says it’s still a relatively small slice of the $4-billion the organization has granted in its 30 years.

Mr. MacArthur, who died in 1978, spent the last 20 years of his life in Palm Beach County and played a major role in its development, buying 100,000 acres of real estate and persuading major employers to move there.

His grandson, John R. “Rick” MacArthur, said the Chicago foundation should spend more in the area, having made millions from Palm Beach property sales. But he added that trying to posthumously guess the intentions of his grandfather, who left few specific instructions for the foundation, “is an absurd exercise.”
