After coming under fire for not better representing Latinos among winners of the Kennedy Center Honors, the institution has convened a panel of artists and activists to review its selection process for the annual arts award, reports The Washington Post.

Formed late last year and announced on Monday, the 11-member committee will examine a process that the president of the Kennedy Center, Michael M. Kaiser, has acknowledged lacks transparency.

Only two of the 186 artists honored since the awards were created in 1978 have been Hispanic, prompting complaints from Latino groups. The controversy was inflamed last year when Mr. Kaiser reportedly directed a vulgarity at the head of the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts during a heated phone argument over the issue.
