L.A. Donor Pledges $30-Million to Restore Historic Synagogue

February 20, 2013, 9:27 am

Los Angeles philanthropist Erika Glazer has committed $30-million over 15 years toward restoration and redevelopment of the Wilshire Boulevard Temple, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Ms. Glazer, heiress to a shopping center fortune, grew up listening to sermons at the Reform synagogue by the late Edgar Magnin, known as the “rabbi to the stars,” who persuaded Hollywood notables to finance the grand sanctuary, built in 1929 and known for its Byzantine-style dome.

The donation will go toward debt payments on the tax-free, $150-million bond by which the temple is financing the work, and gives Ms. Glazer naming rights for the campus west of downtown Los Angeles.
