The Swiss Red Cross is halving its supply of donated blood to Greece over the financially stricken country’s failure to pay for the shipments on time, the Associated Press reports.

The head of the charity’s transfusion service said that while Greece has repaid past debts amounting to several million Swiss francs, the Red Cross will reduce the supply from 28,000 blood packets a year to 14,000 between now and 2020 to limit its financial risk.

Rudolf Schwabe, who heads the Swiss Red Cross’s transfusion service, said the Red Cross held “long talks” with the Greek Health Ministry on the issue and will provide expertise to help the country develop its own blood donor system.
