Mass. Attorney General to Review Hospital Board’s Handling of Ethics Case

May 17, 2010, 1:33 pm

The Massachusetts attorney general’s office announced last week its plans to review whether the board of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, in Boston, appropriately handled a “lapse of judgment” by its chief executive, and whether charitable funds were misspent because of a personal relationship he had with an employee, says The Boston Globe.

The hospital’s chief executive, Paul Levy, was fined $50,000 by the hospital’s board last week for showing poor judgment in a relationship with a female employee. The board did not disclose details of an investigation into Mr. Levy or the nature of Mr. Levy’s relationship with the employee.

Attorney General Martha Coakley announced her decision following an emergency meeting of the hospital board, which voted to send Ms. Coakley a letter requesting she review how the board has handled Mr. Levy’s actions.

The newspaper said it could not reach Mr. Levy for comment.
