N.J. Investigating Unregistered Sandy Group That Raised $1-Million

New Jersey authorities are investigating the finances of a Superstorm Sandy relief organization that claimed, but did not have, charitable and tax-exempt status while raising $1-million for hurricane victims, the Asbury Park Press reports.

Eric Kanefsky, acting director the state Division of Consumer Affairs, said his office has been examining the Hurricane Sandy Relief Foundation since December and told its founders, John Sandberg and Christina Terraccino of Sparta, N.J., last month to cease raising money until they had registered with the state.

The state agency is also alerting dozens of other unregistered storm-relief organizations to come into compliance with New Jersey’s charities law, according to the Press, which had previously reported on assertions on the Relief Foundation’s Web site that were being called into question.
