The Archdiocese of New York announced Tuesday that 24 more Roman Catholic schools within its jurisdiction will shut down at the end of this academic year, says The Wall Street Journal.

Church officials expressed cautious optimism that the latest round of closures will be the last for the foreseeable future. The diocese, which covers Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, and seven nearby counties, has shuttered 67 elementary and high schools since 2000 amid plunging enrollment and a major reorganization.

The system will begin the next school year with 173 elementary and 48 high schools. “We have a game plan where we can hold the line and sustain these schools going forward,” Superintendent Timothy McNiff said. “Can we give absolute guarantees? No.”
