New York State’s ethics commission has tentatively adopted new regulations to mandate some disclosure of contributors to nonprofit organizations engaged in lobbying and politicking, The New York Times writes. The rule, approved Tuesday on an emergency basis, would require advocacy groups that devote at least 3 percent of their spending to lobbying in the state to identify donors publicly who gave more than $5,000.

However, under an amendment incorporated into the new regulation, organizations might not be required to disclose the full amount a donor gives, only an unspecified portion determined by a formula. Susan Lerner of watchdog group Common Cause New York called the amended rule, which is awaiting final commission approval, “a compromise position, and as such, it’s an acceptable one.”
