Amid complaints about huge markups on tickets for Wednesday’s star-studded “12-12-12″ concert for Superstorm Sandy relief, a New York lawmaker has proposed legislation to ban profit-making resale of tickets for charity events, The Wall Street Journal reports.

State Sen. Daniel Squadron’s bill would make it illegal to resell tickets at higher than face value if the event benefits a charity or nonprofit cause. He said inflated prices in the secondary market for the Madison Square Garden Sandy benefit showed that “profiteers are able to co-opt charity events to line their own pockets—creating false ticket shortages for consumers and undermining events meant to help those in need.”
