A British charity umbrella organization warns that nonprofit groups in England that operate abroad could be paying tens of millions of dollars more when new European tax rules take effect January 1, reports Third Sector.
The Charity Tax Group says the new regulations will require some nonprofit agencies to pay value-added tax in the country where a service originates. “Charities that hire overseas investment specialists or carry out a lot of work overseas will be the worst hit,” said John Hemming, a tax accountant and vice chairman of the umbrella group.
Third Sector also reports that charity associations from across Europe will meet in Brussels next week to discuss strategies for lobbying the European Commission on tax policy.
