The organization that manages Internet addresses for nonprofit groups has proposed two new extensions to supplement the existing, and heavily used, .org domain, writes the tech-news site Mashable.

The Public Interest Registry has submitted applications to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, better known as ICANN, for the .ngo and .ong domains. The latter represents the equivalent of “nongovernmental organization” in French, Spanish, Italian, and other Romance languages.

“NGO itself, as an acronym, is a very well-known term. It’s a very strong self-identification, those three letters, which is very important on the Internet when you want to be found,” said Brian Cute, the registry’s CEO.

Unlike .org, the new extensions would be available only to nonprofit entities. Groups that now use the older domain will not be required to switch.
