New York Firefighters’ Calendar Returns After Pause for Scandal

April 25, 2011, 9:32 am

The New York Fire Department’s popular fund-raising item, a calendar featuring buff, bare-chested  firefighters, is returning after three years’ hiatus following a scandal, says The New York Times.

The 2012 calendar will be the first after the city department stopped printing it in 2008, when it was discovered that one of the models had also appeared nude in the 2004 video sensation “Guys Gone Wild.”

When the news broke in 2008, the head of the  FDNY Foundation, which raises private money to support the fire department, said, “The department’s reputation is more important than raising money.”

Now, however, the calendar, which costs $15.95 per copy,  will be released early in the year to take advantage of the height of the city’s tourist season, with a goal of raising about $250,000.

“It’s no secret that fiscally for anyone, for any nonprofit group, it’s a tough time,” said Frank Dwyer, a spokesman for the fire department.
