NFL Breast-Cancer Campaign Generates Little for Research

October 15, 2012, 9:49 am

The National Football League’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month program to raise money by selling pink jerseys and other themed merchandise donates just 5 percent of the take directly to the American Cancer Society, according to Business Insider and The Huffington Post.

The national cancer charity spends 70.8 percent of its budget on research and other program expenses, so for each $100 worth of pink items sold through the NFL’s online shop, including gear worn by players during games, $3.54 directly benefits cure and treatment efforts.

The league said the remaining proceeds from the October program pay for A Crucial Catch, an awareness program it operates with the Cancer Society to emphasize the importance of annual screenings for women.
