Global nonprofit group Action Against Hunger unveiled a new public-service advertising campaign that eschews photographs of malnourished children in favor of more abstract imagery, writes The New York Times.
One of the group’s new magazine ads shows a line of seven paper dolls, one of them a stick figure. Another features an open pizza box with only a tiny pizza inside. The copy for both solicits donations to aid the 3.5 million people the charity says die each year because they do not get enough to eat.
Geoffrey M. Glick, director of external relations for the U.S. arm of Action Against Hunger, said the organization is “trying to communicate in a more positive, upbeat way, focus more on the solution and less on an actual distancing image of a child with an illness so removed from our world.”
