Nonprofit groups and major corporations have lined up behind a campaign organized by the American Federation of Teachers to turn around one of the country’s most troubled school districts, according to The Washington Post and the Associated Press.
Save the Children, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and IBM are among the charities, foundations, and businesses joining educational and government institutions on the five-year effort targeting rural McDowell County in southern West Virginia. The project has won approval from the state Board of Education and will be publicly rolled out on Friday.
The Reconnecting McDowell project aims to combine educational and social help in the economically devastated county, which has one of the country’s lowest median incomes and the state’s highest dropout rate, tackling poverty, addiction, and lack of Internet access along with schools issues.
