NPR and University Team Up on New Orleans Nonprofit Newsroom

July 27, 2012, 10:46 am

With New Orleans’s Times-Picayune newspaper set to shift from daily publication to a three-day-a-week schedule in the fall, NPR, the University of New Orleans, and a group of business and community leaders are laying the groundwork for a new nonprofit journalism group, The Wall Street Journal writes.

NewOrleansReporter.org is set to launch as a digital and radio news outlet by the end of the year under the aegis of WWNO, an NPR affiliate owned by the university, with fundraising support from Greater New Orleans Inc., a business-development group.

The project is one of several local-media responses to newspaper’s cutback, announced two months ago, which would make New Orleans the biggest U.S. city without a print daily.
