Court papers filed by the New York attorney general’s office allege that the State Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada Jr. put funds from a network of nonprofit health clinics he controlled to personal and political use, The New York Times reports.
The documents seek to compel Mr. Espada to comply with a subpoena in connection with an ongoing state probe of his actions as chief executive of Soundview HealthCare Network, a nonprofit network of clinics in the Bronx. The papers say evidence collected by investigators indicates the senator used the network’s contract with a for-profit management firm he controls to siphon off funds for personal use and campaign expenses.
Mr. Espada said he has been cooperating with the probe and accused Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo of using him “as [Cuomo’s] personal political pinata.”
