N.Y. Veterans Group Alleged to Exaggerate Charity Commitment

January 7, 2010, 1:20 pm

A New York veterans organization that states on its Web site that three-quarters of donations go to aid for servicemen and -women actually spends barely half its contributions in direct charity, according to Forbes.com.

Newly filed financial statements for 2008 show the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes Foundation, one of a stable of charities run by the self-described nonprofit entrepreneur Roger Chapin, show a charitable commitment of 51 percent, with much of the organization’s money spent on mail solicitations.

The veteran’s group did not provide comment for the article.
