Obituary: Anita Roddick, 64, Body Shop Founder

September 11, 2007, 12:21 pm

Anita Roddick, founder of the Body Shop chain and a pioneer of environmentally friendly cosmetics, died on Monday of a brain hemorrhage at age 64, reports The Washington Post.

Anita Roddick, who said she “came out of the womb as an activist,” protested corporate globalization, despite the meteoric international rise of the Body Shop. She championed environmental causes, and was credited with the promotion of natural products in cosmetics and of recyclable packaging.

In 1997, she tried, and failed, to transform her publicly traded firm into a charity, and she stepped down as its chief executive a year later.
