Obituary: Dan Duncan, 77, Oil Billionaire and Medical Benefactor

March 31, 2010, 6:00 am

Dan L. Duncan, a Texan whose oil-pipeline fortune fueled extensive giving to hospitals, medical research, and other causes, died Sunday at his Houston home, says Bloomberg. He was 77.

Mr. Duncan’s Enterprise Products is the country’s largest pipeline partnership, and Forbes estimated his worth at $9-billion.

While he also gave to museums and youth organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America, Mr. Duncan’s philanthropic focus was health care. He gave an estimated $250-million to the Texas Medical Center system over the past five years and donated $100-million to the Baylor College of Medicine, where he was treated for prostate cancer in 1995.

Mr. Duncan and his family ranked No. 15 on The Chronicle’s most recent annual ranking of donors by generosity.

It is very inspiring to find people like Mr. Duncan that know that showing their genorosity by giving to worthy organizations is a life marking experience. I am a recent nonprofit organization in south texas with so much need for new donor to our very worthy cause. The children in our area schools will benefit from having a community center that provides the tools to help them with their leadership and social skills leading to their college lives. In addition, the funding would help with funding a thrift store that can channel more funds to help students in scholarships, elderly, needy families and veterans with health, living and nutrition.I know that MR. Duncan will be received by GOD’s kingdom for all he has donated. In addition, if his foundation would like to consider another worthy cause, we can definitely benefit from his help in south texas.
