Ohio Soup Kitchen Losing Donors Over Ryan Visit, Says Charity Head

October 22, 2012, 10:39 am

The president of a Youngstown, Ohio, social service charity claims contributors are pulling their money from the organization in the wake of a surprise visit by Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan to its soup kitchen last week, writes The Huffington Post.

Brian J. Antal, head of the Mahoning County St. Vincent De Paul Society, told the Web site the organization has suffered “a substantial backlash” since he publicly criticized the G.O.P. campaign for what Mr. Antal said was a staged photo opportunity of Mr. Ryan and his family re-washing dishes that had already been cleaned and put away.

The charity’s leader declined to specify how much it has lost, saying, “Donations are a private matter with our organization.” He said Ryan supporters have barraged the society with angry phone calls and posted comments on its Facebook page calling on donors to walk away.
