In a Wall Street Journal column, the president of nonprofit think tank the American Enterprise Institute reviews scholarly studies on how giving to charity affects health and happiness and how others view us.
Arthur Brooks cites research at several universities showing that people who volunteer or donate money report greater satisfaction with life and less stress than do nongivers. Some studies even indicate that donors live longer and that giving makes people appear more physically attractive to others.
“So, on behalf of my colleagues in America’s millions of nonprofits, voluntary organizations and houses of worship, I want you to know we’re here for you,” Mr. Brooks writes in a tongue-in-cheek conclusion. “We want to help you become healthier, happier, and better looking.”Return to Top
