The British relief charity Oxfam stands to collect nearly a half-million dollars if sports bets placed by a deceased donor come up winners, reports Sky News.
Nicholas Newlife, of Oxfordshire, England, who died last year at age 69, left the humanitarian-aid organization his entire estate, including the betting slips on about $6,700 worth of long-term wagers he had taken on tennis and cricket between 2000 and 2005.
The charity already cashed in about $25,300 when Roger Federer won the 2009 French Open, fulfilling Mr. Newlife’s bet that the Swiss star would reach 14 Grand Slam titles before 2020, and it would collect $154,000 if Mr. Federer wins a seventh Wimbledon title by that year.
