A 1923 watercolor by Frank Weston Benson, left at a Portland, Ore., Goodwill store, was sold online at auction for $165,002, reports The Oregonian.
Goodwill started the bidding at $10, but bids shot up after Matthew W. Gerber, an appraiser and owner of Matthew’s Gallerie, in Oswego Falls, Ore., confirmed the work’s creator. “Frank Benson is a top-tier impressionist,” said Mr. Gerber. “When they put this up, they didn’t have a clue what it was.”
Works by Mr. Benson hang in the National Gallery of Art, in Washington, as well as other museums.Return to Top
