Planned Parenthood Advocacy Helped Swing 2012 Election

Planned Parenthood emerged as the most effective advocacy group in the 2012 election, in large part with a sophisticated outreach targeting 1 million, mostly swing-state women voters likely to take Mitt Romney’s positions on abortion and contraception into account, The Washington Post writes.

More than 98 percent of spending by the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, an arm of the national women’s health nonprofit, went to races in which its favored candidate won, according to a Sunlight Foundation analysis.

Pollsters and strategists credited Planned Parenthood’s strategy of highlighting the Republican presidential candidate’s comments on reproductive health issues in phone calls and mailings to female voters in close states. The organization put about $15-million on 2012 races, nearly four times what it spent in 2008.
