President Calls for End to Boy Scouts’ Ban on Gays

February 4, 2013, 9:48 am

In an interview Sunday, President Obama said the Boy Scouts of America should admit homosexuals as members and troop leaders, The Washington Post reports.

“I think that my attitude is that gays and lesbians should have access and opportunity the same way everybody else does in every institution and walk of life,” the president said in response to a question from CBS’s Scott Pelley on the youth charity’s longstanding prohibition.

Top Scouts officials meeting this week in Texas are weighing a proposal to lift the national gay ban and leave membership issues in the hands of local scouting organizations.
