Private Groups Support New White House Math and Science Initiative

February 7, 2012, 10:35 am

President Obama is set to unveil a $100-million program Tuesday to train 100,000 new teachers in 10 years to alleviate a national shortage of math and science instructors, says The Washington Post.

Fourteen businesses, foundations, universities, and education organizations, including Teach for America, Google, and the Carnegie Corporation, have pledged a combined $22-million to support Department of Education grants to colleges with innovative teacher-training programs. The president will seek $80-million for the plan from Congress.

American companies have pressed the government to aid efforts to produce more highly skilled workers to keep the U.S. technology industry from losing ground to other countries. President Obama raised the issue in his January 24 State of the Union address.
