February 8, 2012, 9:58 am

The Salvation Army set a new high for the organization in proceeds generated from its most recent holiday campaign, which brought in $147.6-million, says the Associated Press.

The social-service charity’s bell ringers in 2011 topped a previous record of $142-million set a year earlier. More than $41-million of last year’s donations were collected outside Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores.

The Salvation Army introduced an option for electronic donations in its latest Red Kettle seasonal campaign, arranging for the mobile-payment firm Square to accept cell-phone gifts in four major cities.
