The embattled San Diego Opera, seeking a groundswell of donations to put on its next season, passed a $1-million crowdfunding target Friday, 10 days ahead of a May 19 deadline, and has now doubled the goal, the Los Angeles Times and City News Service report.
The online drive launched in late April had yielded $1.14-million in contributions as of Saturday. On Friday, opera officials announced that two board members and an investment group had put up a $500,000 matching gift challenge in hopes of bringing $1-million more into the organization’s coffers.
The opera’s board, reconstituted in mid-April after prior leadership made a controversial decision to shut down the 49-year-old company, is set to meet May 16, three days before the latest scheduled closing date. Officials say the company needs to raise at least $6.5-million to put on a scaled-back 50th season. Taking into account the the crowdfunding money and other contributions, it remains about $2.7-million short.Return to Top
