Students at schools in several states have been barred from wearing rubber bracelets produced by a breast-cancer charity that bear the message “I love boobies,” USA Today reports.
The wristbands—sold by the Keep a Breast Foundation, a California nonprofit organization that seeks to raise cancer awareness among young people—have sparked debate in California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. School districts in those states have either banned them or required students to wear them inside-out.
Jim Aisenbrey, principal at Baltic High School, near Sioux Falls, S.D., said school officials “are not insensitive to the cause,” but he added, “I do think there are more proper ways to bring this plight to the attention of people.”
The charity’s founder, Shaney Jo Darden, says the message was intended to spark debate. “That’s the whole idea. It’s getting people to talk about breast cancer. It’s getting people to share their feelings about how this disease has impacted their life,” she says. “The bracelet is doing what it’s meant to do—it’s making people talk.”
