A shoeshine man at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh has donated some $200,000 to the institution over the years, turning over all his tips to support a program that covers medical costs for poor families, Pittsburgh television station WTAE reports.

Albert Lexie, who started working at the hospital in 1981, said he charges $5 for a shine but typically receives $6 or $7 and sometimes more. He routinely gives the collected tips, amounting to several hundred dollars a week, to the Children’s Hospital Free Care Fund.

“I think he does it because he loves the kids,” said pediatrician Dr. Joseph Carcillo, who estimated Mr. Lexie had “donated over a third of his lifetime salary” to the fund.
