Soros to Deepen Ties in New Orleans

December 4, 2009, 2:08 pm

George Soros, the billionaire financier and philanthropist, said this week that he plans to step up his involvement in post-Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts in New Orleans, The Lens reports.

Mr. Soros was in the city for a meeting of his Open Society Institute, which has been supporting grass-roots programs in New Orleans for a decade, focusing on criminal justice. The institute also provides funds to The Lens, a nonprofit news and investigative site.

Mr. Soros did not specify how much his giving would increase in the city, where post-storm federal recovery benefits are expected to expire next year.
