Southern Baptists Call on Boy Scouts to Maintain Gay Ban

February 21, 2013, 10:54 am

The Southern Baptist Convention, which represents the largest group of U.S. Protestants, is formally urging the Boy Scouts of America to keep in place its prohibition on homosexual members and troop leaders, says the Associated Press.

The 16-million member convention’s executive council approved a resolution Tuesday stating that abandoning the ban would put the Scouts “at odds with a consistent biblical worldview on matters of human sexuality” and calling on like-minded corporate leaders to support the youth charity financially.

The Scouts’ National Council is slated to vote in May on a proposal to drop the organization-wide ban and instead allow individual troops to set their own policies on gay membership. About 70 percent of Scout chapters are sponsored by faith groups.
