Strapped City Opera to Sell Costumes and Sets Online

New York City Opera will hold an online auction to dispose of 90 percent of its costumes, sets, and props next month, shedding the accouterments of dozens of past productions in a cost-cutting move, says The Wall Street Journal.

Executive director George Steel said it will be cheaper for the financially struggling company to rebuild materials for revival shows than to continue paying $550,000 a year to store them. The company disclosed then-unspecified plans to dispose of much of its stagecraft in October.

The sale, to start in mid-January, follows City Opera’s departure from Lincoln Center and a significant reduction in its production schedule as it seeks to slash annual spending from $31-million to $13-million.
