Study Finds Nonprofit Group’s Israel Trips Increase Intrafaith Marriages

October 28, 2009, 1:32 pm

A U.S. Jewish charity’s program offering free trips to Israel is increasing the number of marriages within the faith among young Jews, according to a new Brandeis University study, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Researchers interviewed people who applied to go on trips arranged by the nonprofit group Taglit-Birthright Israel and found that 72 percent of those who made the journey married other Jews, compared to only 46 percent of those who were not selected. The study was paid for by the U.S. organization, but its author, the Brandeis Jewish-studies professor Len Saxe, said his team hit upon the marriage question themselves, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Birthright Israel plans to build a major fund-raising push around the study and its findings on Jewish continuity, according to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
