Superstorm Sandy Still Casts a Shadow Over N.Y. Food Banks

New York City food charities are still struggling to recover from a major depletion of their resources resulting from Superstorm Sandy, says The Wall Street Journal.

Food banks and pantries were already weakened by cuts in government aid and rising food prices when the hurricane hit on October 29, rapidly swelling the ranks of the city’s homeless and unemployed.

Margarette Purvis, chief executive of the Food Bank of New York City, said her organization has been relying largely on state and federal assistance in the wake of the storm and started 2013 with very little donated food of is own.
