Tech Billionaire Omidyar Wins Praise for Approach to Giving

eBay Chairman Pierre Omidyar’s brand of investing in social change is having a significant impact on philanthropy, much as his company did in commerce, USA Today writes in a profile of the technology mogul and philanthropist.

Mr. Omidyar and his wife, Pam—who rank 18th in The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s roster of last year’s biggest donors—have applied a results-oriented, venture-capital approach in committing more than $1-billion to various causes, much of it through their four philanthropic organizations. They are also taking a higher public profile after living and giving in relative seclusion in the years after Mr. Omidyar made his fortune.

Bill Clinton termed Mr. Omidyar “the new face of philanthropy,” and Bill Gates said the eBay founder approaches giving “with an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit that we can all learn from.”

In another article, USA Today looks at the impact on philanthropy of tech moguls such as Mr. Gates and Salesforce.com head CEO Marc Benioff.
