Texas Judge Blocks Ban on Planned Parenthood Support

May 1, 2012, 10:56 am

A federal judge in Texas granted a preliminary injunction Monday blocking the state from enforcing a ban on participation by Planned Parenthood affiliates in a publicly funded women’s health program, Bloomberg says.

Planned Parenthood filed suit last month challenging the Texas rule, which bars contracts with groups linked to abortion providers. Forty-nine clinics that provide cancer screenings, contraception, and other services under the state program were due to lose funding on Monday.

Ruling in Austin, U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel cited “the potential for immediate loss of access to necessary medical services by several thousand Texas women” in temporarily blocking enforcement of the rule but said the issue should still be decided by a trial.
