Several big travel companies have pulled advertisements from a controversial online ad network that distributes money from consumer purchases to charities, among them the conservative Family Research Council, The New York Times writes.
AllOut.org, a gay-rights organization, has led a campaign pressing travel firms to cut ties with Charity Give Back Group over its support of the council, which has been labeled an anti-gay hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center for promoting gay conversion therapy and the abolition of same-sex marriage policies.
The Westin hotel chain, Expedia.com, and Hotels.com have withdrawn ads from Charity Give Back, formerly known as the Christian Values Network, which allows people to direct to a selected charity a percentage of their spending purchases from retailers advertising on its site.
In a statement, Charity Give Back Group said the Family Research Council was not a hate group but a charity approved by the IRS and that the other groups it supports include numerous nonreligious organizations.
